Accelerating Higher Education Expansion and Development (AHEAD) Operation

The development of the higher education sector is of central importance to enable Sri Lanka to make the transition from a lower-middle income country (LMIC) to an upper-middle income country (UMIC). Recognizing this, the government of Sri Lanka and the World Bank have agreed, to support the higher education sector through a Bank-funded Accelerating Higher Education Expansion and Development (AHEAD) operation. The Faculty of Applied Science, Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna has won a 100 million grant from the World Bank under AHEAD operation out of fifty-three eligible faculties in Sri Lanka.

Under this AHEAD grant, Faculty of Applied Science has proposed five key activities namely enhancing learning activities based on OBE-LCT, empowering industrial interaction & field visits, developing socio-emotional skills & ethnic cohesion, English language skill enhancement through computer-assisted language learning and dissemination of knowledge and strengthening research activities.

Enhancing learning activities based on OBE-LCT 1.1. Establishing three student-centred laboratories
1.2. Developing students’ skills using an interactive smart lecture hall
1.3 Enhancement of curricula to adopt SLQF and internationally accepted benchmarks
Empowered Industrial interaction and field visits 2.1 Establishing a career guidance focal point in employment feasible location in Colombo to enhance internships
2.2 Organizing career-based activities (career fairs/industry University collaborations)
2.3 Establishing field-oriented initiatives
Developing socio-emotional and employable skills, ethnic cohesion and creativity among students through subject related activities 3.1 Promoting students’ initiatives to disseminate knowledge and skills through community outreach programs (both in and out of the university)
3.2 National and international university collaboration connected to mentoring (workshops, seminars, competitions)
3.3 Enhancing employable skills among the students through product development and marketing
English Language skill enhancement through computer-assisted language learning (CALL) 4..1 Developing general IT skills relevant to ELL using CALL lab
4.2 Developing English language skills using specialized ELL and ELT software 4.3. Training both the students and the staff in facing national and international English examinations such as UTEL and IELTS
Strengthening research and increasing visibility to the research publication and projects 5.1 Strengthening the research capabilities of students (and staff) using research laboratories
5.2 Facilitating students in organizing community workshop for disseminating their research findings on burning community and environment-related issues
5.3 Establishing student centred fully facilitated manuscript development laboratory
Strengthening online Teaching and Learning Activities 6.1 Converting the existing syllabus into sections that are deliverable online
6.2 Training both the students and the staff in using Learning Management System
6.3 Enrichment of existing infrastructure of Learning Management System (LMS)
