DEAN’S MESSAGE

The Faculty of Applied Science has earned a reputation since its establishment in 1997. It is one of the pioneer faculties of the Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna (University of Vavuniya). This Faculty presently offers degree programmes which are of four-year duration: BSc Honours in Computer Science, BSc Honours in Environmental Science, BSc Honours in Information Technology, and of three-year duration: BSc in Applied Mathematics and Computing, BSc in Environmental Science and BSc in Information Technology. The total annual intake to the Faculty through UGC is 200 and is expected to accommodate 250 from the academic year 2018/19 onwards. The Faculty also accommodates international students through UGC. The medium of instruction is English.

The Faculty, at present, consists of two departments of studies: Bio-science and Physical Science and the infrastructure facilities are newly established at its original place called Pampaimadhu, located nearly 10 km far away from Vavuniya town. As the location of this Faculty is in the countryside, the student can enjoy nature and also can utilize the facilities available at the Faculty for self-learning. The students are also encouraged to use the facilities available for sports activities and cultural programmes. The Faculty strives to produce the graduates as active corporate responsible citizens for the Nation.

The Faculty adheres to the semester-wise credit-based system of education. The degree programmes offered by this Faculty are unique and multidisciplinary. The Faculty is concentrating on enhancing the teaching and learning environment towards the Outcome Based Education and student-centered Learning. The curriculum of these degree programmes is recently revised and updated to meet the needs of the job market for the relevant disciplines. Revised curriculum paves the way towards enhancing the required skills (critical thinking, problem-solving, team spirit, leadership skills, and analytical skills) development of the students through practical laboratory sessions, field-based practical sessions, and through student-centered Learning approach. In addition, all the students are enriched with communication skills and IT skills. Faculty also offers academic advisory and counselling programmes and financial assistance for needy students to assist our students during their course of studies at the Faculty.

The degree programmes offered by this Faculty are highly recognized nationally and globally. The passed out graduates are employed as academics in higher educational institutions, as researchers in research institutes, as administrators and as IT professionals in various organizations. A significant number of our graduates are enrolled in M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. degree programmes in the Universities nationally and globally.
