The Faculty of Applied Science traces its roots to the establishment of the Northern Province Affiliated University College (NPAUC) in 1991, which offered diploma-level programmes in Vavuniya. On 1st April 1997, NPAUC was upgraded as the Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna under Section 22 of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978, and the Faculty of Applied Science was established as one of its two founding faculties. Since then, it has grown into a vibrant academic community dedicated to excellence in teaching, learning, and research.
From its inception, the Faculty has cultivated a flexible, friendly, and supportive environment that promotes strong student–staff relationships. With a culture that emphasizes personalized attention and active engagement, it provides an ideal setting for students to thrive both academically and personally.
The Faculty currently comprises two academic departments—the Department of Physical Science and the Department of Bio-science—which together offer a range of undergraduate degree programmes, including BSc in Applied Mathematics and Computing, BSc Honours in Environmental Science, BSc Honours in Computer Science, BSc Honours in Information Technology, and BSc in Information Technology.
With the elevation of the Vavuniya Campus to the University of Vavuniya in 2021, the Faculty of Applied Science entered a new era in its journey. Upholding its mission of advancing higher education, research, and innovation, the Faculty proudly celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 2022, marking 25 years of academic excellence and dedicated service to the nation.
