Workshop on Applying Machine Learning and Deep Learning Techniques for Research

The Department of Physical Science, Faculty of Applied Science, organized a workshop titled Applying Machine Learning and Deep Learning Techniques for Research on January 8, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM in the Smart Lecture Hall of the Faculty of Applied Science.

Prof. Manivanan Siyamalan, a senior lecturer from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Jaffna, served as the resource person for the workshop. Final-year special degree students in Computer Science and Information Technology attended the workshop, gaining valuable insights into machine learning and deep learning practices.

The primary objective of the workshop was to provide participants with expert perspectives and a deeper understanding of machine learning and deep learning, equipping them to align their research efforts effectively in these areas. Students actively engaged with Prof. Siyamalan, addressing their queries and exploring potential research directions in machine learning and deep learning.

The lecture began by distinguishing between artificial intelligence and machine learning, followed by an introduction to deep learning. Various learning approaches—supervised, unsupervised, and semi-supervised—were covered, along with discussions on regression and neural networks. The session also delved into convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and their latest architectures, exposing students to cutting-edge advancements in the field.

The workshop was highly impactful, offering students valuable guidance for their research endeavors. Approximately 70 students participated actively, contributing to the event’s success.

Mrs. Yasotha Ram Ramanan, the lecturer in charge of the Machine Learning module, coordinated this workshop on the stipulated time frame.
