One-Day Workshop on Electronics Practical for G.C.E. (A/L) Physics Teachers

On August 16, 2024, the Department of Physical Science, Faculty of Applied Science, University of Vavuniya, organized a one-day workshop on electronics practical for G.C.E. (A/L) Physics teachers. The event took place at the Electronic Lab of the Department of Physical Science, university of vavuniya, bringing together over 25 Physics teachers from the Vavuniya South, Vavuniya North, Mannar, and Madu zonal education areas.

The workshop, held from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, was coordinated by Mr. S. Kuhanesan, with resource persons including Mr. S. Kuhanesan, Dr. S. Kirushanth, and Mr. K. Mathanakaran. They guided the teachers through hands-on electronic practical sessions, aiming to equip them with the necessary skills to better educate their students in electronics, a component that needs to be focused on in future G.C.E (A/L) physics exams.

The materials (electronics circuits) for the workshop were supplied by the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna, with significant sponsorship from the Ratnam Foundation, UK. The foundation had previously donated electronic circuits to the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, specifically for the purpose of training physics teachers and encouraging students to engage with electronics in physics exams.

A special highlight of the day was the visit by Dr. R. Niththyananthan, founder of the Ratnam Foundation, and his wife. They observed the workshop activities and provided motivational talks to the teachers, emphasizing the importance of electronics in the physics subject.

The event concluded with a formal session attended by university staff, including the Vice-Chancellor Prof. A. Atputharajah, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science Dr. (Mrs) Jeyagowri Nimaln, and Head of the Department of Physical Science Dr. M. Kayanan. During this session, participation certificates were awarded to the teachers, marking the successful completion of the workshop.

The workshop was a significant step forward in enhancing the capabilities of Physics teachers in the Northern region, ensuring that students are better prepared for the electronic components of their A/L physics exams.
