HEAD’S MESSAGE

The Department of Physical Science was established in 1997, coinciding with the launch of the Faculty of Applied Science at the Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna (now the University of Vavuniya). Initially, the department offered course units for the Applied Mathematics and Computing degree program. In 2006, the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) degree program was introduced to accommodate students from diverse advanced-level education streams.

Over the years, the Applied Mathematics and Computing degree program was restructured into two distinct tracks: a three-year General degree program and a four-year Honours degree program in Computer Science.

The department’s mission is to equip undergraduate students with cutting-edge knowledge in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, and Information Technology. This goal is achieved through a blend of coursework, hands-on practical sessions, industrial training, and research projects.

In 2018, the Information and Communication Technology program was revamped and renamed the Information Technology degree program. Since the academic year 2017/18, the department has been offering courses across various undergraduate programs, including:

  • Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics and Computing (Three year)
  • Bachelor of Science Honours in Computer Science (Four year)
  • Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (Three year)
  • Bachelor of Science Honours in Information Technology (Four year)

These programs align with the Outcomes-Based Education and Learning-Centered Teaching (OBE-LCT) approach, the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF), and the standards set by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers-Association for Computing Machinery (IEEE-ACM) and the Sri Lanka Standards for Information Technology (SBS-IT).

Historical records reveal that many of our graduates have excelled in various fields. They serve as academics in state universities across Sri Lanka, highly paid IT professionals both locally and internationally, teachers, and successful entrepreneurs. This remarkable track record underscores the Department of Physical Science’s achievement of a 0% unemployment rate among its graduates.
