World Environment Day 2026

The Department of Bio-Science, Faculty of Applied Science, University of Vavuniya, in collaboration with the Central Environmental Authority, successfully organized the World Environment Day 2026 celebration on 03rd June 2026 at the University of Vavuniya.

The programme was conducted to promote environmental awareness, encourage student participation, strengthen university–school interaction, and introduce practical environmental sustainability initiatives within the University premises.

As part of the programme, an essay-writing competition, a 3-minute presentation competition, and an environmentally friendly school assessment were held. Winners and meritorious participants were recognized during the event.

The event also included the opening of the E-waste Collection Centre, the Snake Awareness Board, and the Biogas Unit Initiative at the University of Vavuniya. These initiatives are expected to contribute to long-term environmental awareness, responsible waste management, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable practices within the University.

The event was graced by distinguished guests, resource persons, academic and non-academic staff members, school students, teachers, undergraduates, and representatives from the Central Environmental Authority. Special environmental talks were delivered by Dr. S. Wijeyamohan and Prof. Ananthini Nanthakumaran.
