The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) degree programme was introduced in 2006 and attached with the Department of Physical Science. It was revised as Information Technology (IT) in 2018. Students from all the GCE Advanced Level streams are eligible to apply for this degree programme. At present, the students for the IT degree programme have been selected via the aptitude exam, which is jointly conducted by the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka and University of Vavuniya. Although the IT degree programme is functioning under the Department of Physical Science, it has a separate administrative structure and resources from its establishment. Information Technology degree programme has produced several batches of graduates so far and the graduates have secured promising career prospects both in state and private sectors as well as abroad. A significant number of graduates have won overseas scholarships for postgraduate studies and working as lecturers.

The IT course units are designed to provide knowledge in several subject areas such as Data management, Platform technologies, Programming, Web development, Networking, Image processing, Graphics and Multimedia, High performance computing and relevant Mathematics and Statistics. In addition, it has the group and individual projects to practice as an effective player in a team and to show the individual skills, respectively. Moreover, honours degree students will go for an industrial training programme to enhance their IT and management skills. Furthermore, students perform several activities through IEEE student branch and Information Technology & Computing Society (ITCS).
